After the cycling challenges last week we were determined that today we’d push on with our training and had a 55 mile route planned.
Having climbed over the Ridgeway and swept down into Lambourn I spotted Patrick and I 50 yards ahead at the side of the road. I began to think I was going mad and then thought I was in a dream. I know this all sounds crazy. What I’d actually seen were 2 cyclists wearing Cancer Research UK cycling tops. My brain told me this was us! When Patrick shouted “Ahead right, pull up!” and 4 more cyclists appeared, I started to understand the situation. This was a group of cyclists from Nationwide Head Office in Swindon. They were cycling 70 miles today to raise funds for CRUK and life-saving research. If you’re reading this blog guys – it was great to meet you and we hope you raised lots of money.
With only 6 miles completed and almost 50 to go, we pedalled off. Chatting with the Nationwide Team in their branded tops really motivated us. We felt part of a larger team with everyone doing their bit to make a difference to improve outcomes for cancer patients and their families.
We stopped for lunch at Hampstead Norreys Community Shop and Cafe. Disappointingly the sandwiches had been bought in from elsewhere. However, the coffee and walnut cake was very good. The rest of the ride was uneventful (thankfully!). We completed 55 miles. When we reviewed the data on Gerry the Garmin, it told us that during the ride we’d cycled the fastest 25 miles ever. It must have been the impact of the CRUK Nationwide team! #TogetherWeWillBeatCancer
